Here is a little  taster of information regarding the exciting projects that we will become involved with whilst on expedition:

Communities

The expedition covers three main areas – based around the cities of Cusco, Arequipa and Puno. The project work concentrates on helping poor rural communities in the improvement of their living standards. Many of these communities are at notable altitudes – between 2500m and 3500m above sea level – and the harsh environment, cold nights and limited rainfall make existence here tough.

Project work may include low level construction work, the improvement of village or agricultural infrastructure, teaching of English and playing sports with local children.

Environmental

Deforestation is a significant issue in Peru, with many families still burning wood when they cook. One of the problems occurring due to deforestation is a weakening of the top soil and the quality of the land used for farming is becoming poor. Some of these areas which are used for farmland have been in action for hundreds of years, with pre-Inca terracing of hillsides still in use now.

Wildlife

Camps International work with communities and environmental organisations in reforestation projects, which also has a direct impact on improving the habitat for the thousands of species of birdlife in the area.
